Thinking tonight about Movie Night, I’m suddenly feeling a little nostalgic. Originally I was going to write about all the behind-the-scenes frenetic activity that goes into Movie Night, but nostalgia has won me over, so look for the BTS notes later this week.
My favorite moment at the movies is that instant when the trailers are finished and the screen goes black – just for a few seconds. And then the film rolls and the sound hits all the speakers and you’re off on an adventure.
Movie Nights at Downtown Repalone are great adventures unto themselves. On entering the resort, guests stop to admire Karen’s usherette costume and say hello. Some will compliment her coif while others notice her jewelry details or footwear selection. Next, they’ll promenade toward the kitchen to see who else is just arriving and to drop off a favorite snack or dessert. Heading toward the bar, guests might stop to have a look at one of the many museum displays or, if they’ve brought an uninitiated guest, take time to point out the finer archival items.
Arriving at the bar, the counter top copper and oak polished to a gleam, guests take in the sights and sounds – glasses clinking, laughter and conversation sparking here and there, popcorn and butter aromas, and let’s not forget this year – the tangy scent of nacho cheese. Behind the bar, Mark and Chris pour perfectly strong cocktails, filling glass after glass with whatever is called for. If you’ve been to the bar prior, Chris knows your pleasure. With me he smiles knowingly, already turning to pull the lovely green bottle off the shelf, “Chartreuse?” How can a girl say no?
On the way to the outdoor seating area, movie snacks are readily available. Exactly what you'd expect from any fine theater establishment, DTR offers candy, soda, pastry treats, popcorn, hotdogs and nachos. Guests settle in to chairs, chat with friends and make new acquaintances. And then, when the scene is set, our dear proprietor, John Repalone, welcomes his guests. He takes time to thank all the behind-the-scenes players, welcome celebrity guests, and he makes sure everyone has a little something to eat and a beverage in hand. Then it’s time for the show. And that’s when I get my favorite moment. The screen is dark, the audience sits in eager anticipation, and then the flicker lights the screen with magic. All is as it should be at Downtown Repalone Movie Night.
A phenomenal resort destination! To all who come to this happy place, welcome. Downtown Repalone is YOUR bar! "All I Wanted Was a Sink!"
